OAKESHOTT WELCOMES INCREASING OPERATION OF LINEAR ACCELERATOR FOR PORT MACQUARIE

After many years of fighting and waiting, Independent MP for Port Macquarie, Robert Oakeshott, is pleased to confirm the Port Macquarie Hospital Radiotherapy unit is fully operational.

"The radiotherapy unit has been finding its feet in its first month of operation and is working towards full capacity. We have been fortunate to learn from the installation and operational experiences of other recently-constructed cancer centres, which has allowed the Port Macquarie centre to progress more quickly and efficiently, Mr Oakeshott said.

"It is certainly a long time coming, but we now have a cancer centre and team of staff that are the envy of any regional town. Along with the accommodation provided by Rotary Lodge, we, as a community, have provided an important gift to future generations, by providing a high quality of care to cancer sufferers living in our region, Mr Oakeshott said.

"I would like to thank all parties involved. The Department of Health, the Area Health Service, the clinical and administrative staff at the hospital, and the many community members who donated or helped the project along in some way, should all pat themselves on the back for a job well done, Mr Oakeshott said.

"I now look forward to a grand opening party with everyone involved, which I expect will be some time in the near future. In the meantime, more importantly, we have a machine that every week, is increasing its capacity to help people fight cancer right here in the Hastings," Mr Oakeshott said.
