OAKESHOTT EXPRESSES CONCERNS AT "WILD WEST" TAMPERING ALLEGATIONS AMONGST INTERNET PROVIDERS

Independent MP for Port Macquarie, Robert Oakeshott, has today said he would be recommending to both the State and Federal Government an end to any taxpayers money being forthcoming to any internet and/or broadband provider who is found tampering with other providers equipment.

"Reports of tampering by one provider against another at the various access points provided by Government is a concern, and does not do anything to improve consumer confidence in the broadband network being developed, Mr Oakeshott said.

"This is the Mid-North Coast, not the "wild west", and there should be a pretty simple rule that I would urge all providers to stand by - that is, don't touch anyone else's equipment without their permission, said Mr Oakeshott.

"I was particularly concerned by last weeks reports of tampering at the Government provided Network Access Point (NAP) from Middle Brother Mountain. These NAP's are supposed to expand the community access to broadband, and child-like skirmishes over cabling need to end immediately, said Mr Oakeshott.

"I have alerted both the State and Federal Government's to the allegations, I understand the Police are also aware of the events that occurred, and I will be recommending the removal of any further government funding from any organisation that continues with such behaviour, said Mr Oakeshott.

"Improving and expanding broadband services is an important need for our area. Providers need to understand and support their community obligations in making sure this happens" Mr Oakeshott said today.
