GET INVOLVED, GET ON THE ELECTORAL ROLL!

A significant difference in voting occurs between the recent State election and the upcoming Federal election, and it affects every constituent's right to vote, Independent MP for Port Macquarie, Robert Oakeshott, said today.

"As soon as the Prime Minister calls the Federal election, no-one can join the electoral roll for the upcoming election. So if you want to vote and haven't enrolled, you will need to do so immediately, Mr Oakeshott said.

"An enrolment form can be picked up from the post office or from our office at Grant Street, Port Macquarie, opposite the public library, Mr Oakeshott said.

"At the recent State election, there is a period of grace of about 10 days from the calling of the election before the electoral rolls close. This is not the same for the Commonwealth elections, and people need to be very aware of the potential lost opportunity to vote, if they have still not enrolled, Mr Oakeshott said.

"Voting is a fundamental right and privilege, and is the passport to a better democracy for all of us. I would naturally encourage as many people as possible to participate in the election process, so that your opinions on issues can carry some weight in the eyes of Government, Mr Oakeshott said today.
