DRUG ACTION WEEK UNDERWAY IN THE PORT MAQUARIE ELECTORATE
As Chair of the local Hastings Community Drug Action Team, Independent MP for Port Macquarie, Robert Oakeshott, has invited more community members to consider being involved in both monthly meetings and the many local initiatives of the local drug action team.
"This week is Anti-Drug Action Week, and what better time to consider your involvement at a community level, than by helping lessen drug abuse throughout the local area, Mr Oakeshott said.
"Anyone interested in being involved can contact either myself on 65-840977, or the drug action team secretary, Christine Bannister on 6581 8111.
"Drug Action Week activities undertaken so far include the launch of the DIAL internet based drug information website, that provides everyone with a factual and up-to-date resource website, on the truth about what drugs are in our community, and what impacts they are having on individuals as well as the community, Mr Oakeshott said.
"It is a place to find the facts, and the benefit of providing information through a website means anyone can access it relatively anonymously, Mr Oakeshott said.
"As well, a lot of hard copy resources are available at the local library, with a central information display available for the next fortnight. Once again, anyone can access factual information in a relatively anonymous environment of a public library, Mr Oakeshott said.
"This week, we have also announced the Night-Rider bus program for Port Macquarie, which will run over the summer months and help move people out of the CBD, helping the local taxis get people home safely, minimising malicious damage throughout the CBD, and hopefully lessening the incidence of street drinking throughout town, Mr Oakeshott said.
"This has been possible due a $21,000 grant from the NSW Attorney-General's department, and is a welcome initiative, Mr Oakeshott said today.
